The drawing began with no subject. Some mornings begin that way — the paper on the board, the graphite sharpened, the window open onto the gulf. After three days of small marks, a figure appeared at the lower edge.

I let it stay. The rest of the work, six weeks of it, was about not crowding what was already there.
